I don’t think it’s any exaggeration to say that for most of us one of the most fun parts of getting any new animals, be it pet or livestock, is coming up with a name. This is something that the whole family can get in on and get passionate about! Certainly, chickens deserve good names too.

But coming up with a good name can be tougher than you think. Especially considering that your flock might be pretty sizable, it’s easy to run out of catchy, memorable names.
No worries on that front because I’m here to help: below you’ll find a list of funny and clever names for the hard-working girls in your flock.
No matter what sort of name you like, or what theme, you’re bound to find some new favorites. They are also grouped for your convenience. Let’s get going!
Food-Inspired Names
Some of my very favorite names for chickens generally are food-inspired. There’s just something about a food-based name that is clever, fun and memorable.
Also, not for nothing, it can be a bit of grim humor about the ultimate purpose of our chickens: for most of us, they provide food! Maybe that’s just in the form of eggs, but I know many of us slaughter our own birds to keep our families fed with the freshest and best chicken around.
The following food-based names are all chicken-themed themselves, or items that go great with a chicken dinner or use chicken as an ingredient. We’ve got to get past this fast because it’s making me hungry!
| Tenders | Tikka | Dumpling |
| Waffles | Nugget | Garlic |
| Curry | Butterscotch | Hollandaise |
| Noodle | Caramel | Honey |
| Biscuit | Cookie | Marshmallow |
| Popcorn | Cupcake | Muffin |
| Omelette | Custard | Pumpkin |
| Drumstick | French Toast |
Celebrity Names
Celebrity names are some of the most memorable and catchiest around. I don’t care who you are and how involved you are with the news of the day, chances are pretty good there’s at least one celebrity that you’ve admired or appreciated over the years.
Musicians, actors, socialites, models, influencers and many more: there are some wonderfully punny names in here that will serve your chickens well, and a few gender-bending ones that are downright hilarious.
Hopefully your girls won’t let these names go to their heads and turn them into total divas. Names have a lot of power, so don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Silly Names
Silly birds deserve silly names, and you can’t argue that chickens are the silliest birds around.
Whether it is a powerful curiosity that gets them into trouble, general clumsiness or a propensity to cause problems for you and the other animals on the homestead, whether you laugh or cry chickens can be downright comical.
Accordingly, these silly names are the perfect way to “honor” the birds that make life with a flock so fascinating. Alternately you might give a call and stoic bird one of these names ironically. Either way, you won’t forget it!

Literary Names
For those of us who paid maximum attention in English class, or have an abiding Love of the written word, honoring our favorite chickens with a name inspired from our favorite authors or fictional characters is only natural.
It’s funny how we can sort of map the good and bad qualities of our favorite heroes to our animals, and chickens are the perfect template for this.
Whatever you might think about these birds, they are brighter than you think and have individual personalities all their own. Whether they have a sanguine or choleric temperament, you’ll surely see the resonance between the following characters and your chickens.

Historical Names
If fiction and flights of Fancy aren’t your thing, but you’re still a big reader, maybe you are a student of History. Believe it or not, chickens have played their own part throughout the long centuries of civilization, serving as critically important to producers of eggs, meat, feathers and manure, much the same as they do today.
I think it is only fitting to give them their do accolades with a name inspired by or lifted directly from famous historical figures taken from antiquity or the near past.
From pivotal leaders and philosophers to inventors, explorers, generals, and more, it’s easy enough to dub your girls with a great historical name:

Occupational Names
Did you know the chickens have their own strict social structure in the flock? It’s true. Even though most keepers think only one dominant chicken, typically a rooster, rules over the run there is actually a system of subordinates that keep all the birds organized and generally harmonious.
It’s kind of fun to think of even a simple flock of chickens as being a kind of society.
For that reason, I think giving your girls occupational names, especially ones inspired by their behavior and personalities, just makes sense. This is another great opportunity for puns as you will see. I regret nothing!

It sounds simple, and it really is, but looking at names of crayons, paint and ink will give you tons of great chicken names.
Most of these are short, catchy and classy, and a great way to help you and kids remember the names of even many different chickens. Subtle variations in color are easily recalled using the names of hues, tones and shades.
And it’s okay if you’re just a “red, green, blue, yellow” kind of person; you don’t have to get too fancy with your own color conventions, but I know you can certainly appreciate the names below.

Traditional/Classic Names
Sometimes it’s best to get back to basics, and you can’t argue against that when it comes to names. Instead of trying to out-clever yourself and everyone else that’s ever owned a flock of yardbirds, you might give your girls a basic, classic female name.
Any name can do, and can serve your chickens well. Just be sure that you don’t name the big, beastly tyrant after your significant other, mom, sister or best friend! That might entail some uncomfortable explanations!
You’ve got plenty to pick from in this section, but you can crack open a book of modern baby names or antiquated names for hundreds more.

Naming Your Whole Flock

- herb-inspired names: Basil, Thyme, Ginger, Paprika, etc.
- flower-inspired: Daisy, Lilly, Violet, Petunia, Poppy
- Mexican food: Taco, Burrito, Quesadilla
- fruit-inspired names: Kiwi, Banana, Cherry, etc.
Cute/Endearing Names
Last but not least, sometimes the sweetest and cutest birds in your flock deserve a name that is so sweet, so saccharine, that it will give you diabetes just by saying it. Me personally, I would advise against handing out these names to your entire flock, but if you’ve got a special bond with that one pampered bird, dust one of these off and let them wear it with pride.
