200 Cool Names for Your Badass Rooster

For most chicken owners, keeping a flock of just hens is usually the way to go. They’re easier to manage and often a lot friendlier. But sometimes you just need a rooster.

Whether you want to expand the numbers of your flock the old-fashioned way, give them a little more protection against predators, or you just want the pride of ownership that comes with their impressive colors and plumage, sometimes you just have to take the plunge.

But most homesteading chicken keepers will only have a single rooster, perhaps two at the most, in a modest flock, so giving them a good name is important. You never know, a good name might make all the difference in your rooster’s temperament!

I am kidding about that last part, but I’m not kidding when I say I’m here to help you pick out the perfect name for your bird. Below is a list of 200 cool names for a badass rooster…

Classic Rooster Names

Sometimes people tie themselves up in knots trying to think of a clever, punny, or poetic name for their rooster. Much of the time, that’s just not necessary!

Sometimes a classic name that’s suitable for any pet is all you need. With two exceptions, that’s how I named all of my birds. Trust me, after the initial thrill and laughter of giving your roosters hilarious and lengthy names dies down, you’ll probably get tired of saying them.

It’s best to stick with something simple. The following classic names are all great choices for any rooster, or any other male pet or livestock, for that matter!

Rusty
Sam
Red
Louie
Rocky
Duke
Leo
Buck
Hank
Gus
Charlie
Jack
Max
Rex
Spike
Buster

Funny Rooster Names

On the other hand, half the fun of owning any animal is coming up with a hilarious or pun-derful name.

From the sublime to the clownish and even the occasional in-joke known only to you and your family, sometimes a little comedy is just the thing to take the edge and aggravation off of dealing with these often belligerent and troublesome birds.

Some of these border on the cliché, meaning you’ll hear them over and over again from other people who own chickens, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t a good fit for your own flock. See if any of these won’t tickle your fancy.

Cluck Norris (it doesn’t get any better than this, folks!)
Feathers McCluck
Sir Crows a Lot
Drumstick
Beakman
Squawk Box
Chicken Nugget
The Dude
Colonel Sanders
Roostafarian
Egbert
Pecker
Chick Magnet
Foghorn
Rooster Cogburn
Flapper

Scary Rooster Names

I’ve got to level with you: for every video that you’ll see online of someone that has a close bond with a calm and majestic rooster, even letting the thing sit on their lap or be carried around by them, there are 30 unrecorded cases of roosters being an absolute menace.

They are territorial, ornery, and even downright dangerous (particularly to young kids) thanks to their sharp beaks, greater strength, long spurs, and hair-trigger tempers.

If you’ve had some bad run-ins with your roosters before, or know you are just dealing with a problem child, these scary names might be appropriate.

Bloodletter
Talon
Diablo
The Darkness
Gremlin
Goblin
Raptor
Hades
Fang
Bruiser
Biter
Brimstone
Gargoyle
The Reaper
Slasher
Voorhees
Freddy
Hannibal (the name of my huge Malay rooster!)

Cool Rooster Names

You’ve got to admit, most roosters have a certain panache about them. A certain star power. If it’s that vivid plumage, that strutting walk, the standoffishness and just their whole attitude, they are undeniably cool birds out of all proportion with how common they are.

Accordingly, I think it’s just fine to give a rooster a name that is dripping with cool factor. Sometimes when you steer into cheesy, it goes all the way back around again and becomes truly cool. I think these names are all that and more for our boys!

Maverick
Thor
Loki
Blade
Ace
Flash
Ebon
Blaze
Rocket
Apollo
Striker
Titan
Zeus
Jet
Slick
Wolf

Colorful Names

Roosters of different breeds often come in all colors of the rainbow, and sometimes many different colors and patterns!

Like I alluded to above, roosters really can be sublimely beautiful animals, and if you have a particularly photogenic individual in your flock, it might be worth giving them a name that’s a play on their gorgeous coloration.

I think the following names are all just fine for the most colorful roosters out there.

Copper
Golden
Blue
Shiner
Crimson
Flame
Verdant
Sonny
Cardinal
Jasper
Greylocke
Stone
Azure
Marble
Tiger

Beastly Rooster Names

Roosters might not seem very beastly or very dangerous, but that’s only because you’ve never been trapped with one in the coop at 3:00 AM when the door somehow closed and locked behind you. That’s a story for another day!

These pint-sized powerhouses can be ferocious out of all proportion with their small size, and those big attitudes combined with their amazing colors can give them an almost magical quality. Accordingly, I think names taken from mythical beasts are very appropriate.

Phoenix
Dragon
Naga
Griffin
Kraken
Chimera
Basilisk
Cyclops
Pegasus
Hydra
Cerberus
Sphinx
Minotaur
Leviathan

Names for Small Roosters

Even though roosters are typically much bigger than hens, that might not mean much in the grand scheme of things. Some roosters, namely bantams, are downright tiny.

Naturally, this makes giving them a suitably diminutive or even gently mocking moniker a golden opportunity.

And don’t worry about insulting them: your rooster can’t speak English! Besides, he’s plenty insulted by you just being in his space without his permission! Whether you’ve got a short king or a true pipsqueak, these names are just the ticket…

Tiny
Wisp
Pip
Chip
Flick
Buttons
Peanut
Munchkin
Shorty
Midget
Sprout
Dwarf
Bean
Peewee
Pint
Hobbit
Small Fry
Napoleon

Names for Huge Roosters

And distinctly at the other end of the spectrum, sometimes you’ll wind up with a rooster that is downright huge, especially if you go for a breed that is known for its immense size like the Jersey Giant or formidable Malay.

When a rooster starts tipping the scales in excess of 15 lb, or even closing in on 20, you don’t want to give them a name for merely average birds. All of these imposing names will suit the bill, or rather the beak!

Goliath
Mountain
Chunk
Hoss
Atlas
Brute
Brutus
Colossus
Juggernaut
Hulk
Bear
Moose
Titanic
Everest
Klondike
Grizzly
Mammoth

Names for Black Roosters

Black roosters can be some of the most beautiful, but also the most mysterious and often the most intimidating. And whether your rooster has jet-black feathers or is an actual, all-black inside-and-out breed like an Ayam Cemani, the following names are perfect.

Just be careful and make sure you lighten up the color palette of your flock a little bit: if you start keeping nothing but all-black birds around, your neighbors might think you are in league with dark forces!

Shadow
Midnight
Dusk
Noir
Nightsky
Shade
Raven
Crow
Eclipse
Onyx
Obsidian
Coal
Panther
Ash
Storm
Cinder

Names for White Roosters

White roosters can be a study in contrast. Pure white or pearly plumage can look magnificent, especially when it’s clean and the sun is shining.

But so much of the time, a rooster with white feathers will still have a distinctly dark heart when it comes to mischief and aggression, so consider yourself warned!

Nonetheless, good names for white roosters can run the gamut from the light-hearted to the poetic.

Snow
Casper
Cloud
Blanc
Chalk
Ivory
Cotton
Polar
Whiteout
Swan
Ice
Honest
Glass
Justice
Perfect

Food-Based Rooster Names

I don’t know why, but I think there’s just something appropriate about giving a rooster, or any other pet, a food-based name. They just seem to stick!

Maybe I’m food-obsessed, or maybe these fun, pleasant, and memorable names just work for these intense birds. A few of my favorites are below, but honestly, you can make almost any food you can think of work as a name.

Cookie
Biscuit
Tater
Jelly
Pepper
Burger
Bacon
Nacho
Pickle
Meatball
Dumplin’
Waffle
Popcorn
Chocolate
Fryer
Schnitzel

Cultural Rooster Names

Another one of my favorite naming conventions for roosters is simply to give them a name from another language or culture.

It makes it a little out of the ordinary, memorable, and fun to say without being too obnoxious. It’s also one you won’t be embarrassed to bring up around family or friends!

The following are some of my very favorites, but you can easily look up hundreds and hundreds of names from anywhere around the world for inspiration.

Alejandro
Sergey
Raphael
Nikolai
Oliver
Miguel
Bruno
Dimitri
Enzo
Francisco
Giovanni
Leonardo
Kazuki
Joaquin
Ivan
Hiroshi

Celebrity Rooster Names

Another great way to come up with a great name for any rooster is to look up the names of famous figures from history and celebrities from our own, and past, eras.

This is a great way to rope the family into coming up with the perfect name for any rooster, and the best thing about it is there’s always a celebrity personality that will, somehow, completely match the personality of your individual birds.

Again, my very favorites are below to get you started, but you’ll have no shortage if you want to find other celebrity names!

Winston Churchill (my other favorite rooster, a gorgeous Orpington.)
Elvis
Cash
Sting
Prince
Marley
Sinatra
Montgomery
Bowie
Jagger
Hendrix
Ringo
Dwayne
Schwarzenegger
Stallone
