What Is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple Cider Vinegar, which is also frequently called ACV, is apple cider that has been fermented. The fermentation process forms a healthy probiotic and enzymes that will help to give the Apple Cider Vinegar the benefits that will help heal and protect the body. The vinegar has fewer calories than the apple cider itself and it offers a myriad of health benefits to the body.

It’s important to note that you’ll want only the raw, unfiltered type of apple cider vinegar. This provides a colony of bacteria often referred to as the “mother”. This occurs during the fermentation process and is where the benefits of the apple cider vinegar lie. These live cultures of the colony of bacteria appear web like and will give the user the most nutrition.

The Myths Surrounding Apple Cider Vinegar

Sadly, apple cider vinegar (ACV) has a lot of myths and not enough research behind it to shed light on the many health claims behind it. While it does have anti fungal properties and may fix cholesterol, there is no proof for some of the claims that’ve been circulating on the Internet and through word of mouth. This is the conclusion of this research paper but also that of many MDs whose opinions you can find online.

Specifically:

  • there is no proof it can remove warts
  • there is no proof it can remove moles
  • it probably won’t cure you of allergies (more on this)
  • there doesn’t seem to be any study confirming ACV can improve protein utilization

In addition, please note that many of the other uses don’t have studies to back them up, so please be cautions when using it either externally or internally. Ideally, you want to dilute it with water.

Final Word

Always keep in mind what works well for one person may not work for another. If the apple cider vinegar seems too strong to you, dilute it with water or use less apple cider vinegar next time.

I recently bought 18 baby chicks. After a day or so some started dying. Long story – short, they had pasty butt. Not uncommon condition. When they pooped, the poop would stick to their butt and plug up the hole… leading to death.
After research, the cure was to add a little apple cider vinegar to their water. Problem solved. Wish I had known this sooner.

    • Phred,

So sorry you lost some chicks. Pasty butt is common in chicks and usually easily cured, I wish sellers would provide a little tips sheet when selling chicks, it would have saved you some heartache and money loss. Apple cider vinegar is great to take care of pasty butt. To further the health of your flock, toss up to a teaspoon or oregano into their water, it helps boost their immune system. I also use dried calendula flowers and cinnamon for their healing and preventative properties as well.
