Orange Pomander Orb Recipe

Ingredients

  • Oranges - They should be fresh and not mushy or shriveled up. The fresher the orange (or other citrus fruit) the easier it will be to push the cloves inside.
  • Whole cloves
  • Toothpicks for helping create holes to push the cloves into - optional
  • Twine for hanging the orange pomander orbs optional
  • Citrus zester or knife to lightly etch designs onto the oranges - optional
  • Cinnamon nutmeg, powdered cloves, and/or ginger to roll the orange pomander orbs into, after adorning them with cloves for added fragrance - optional

Instructions

  • Use the knife or citrus zester to etch designs in the orange, if you are choosing to get really artsy with this natural air freshener project.
  • Poke holes into the oranges with the cloves or the toothpick in a pattern or design you have chosen.
  • Push the whole cloves fully inside the orange so they fit snugly in place. If your young children or grandchildren are helping you make the orange pomander orbs, it is best to use a toothpick to start the holes to avoid them hurting their fingertips as they try to push them all the way in through the citrus skin.
  • Pour a few pinches of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, or cloves and mix them together before sprinkling onto the oranges - if you are choosing to add extra and loose natural fragrance to the orange pomander orbs.
  • Place the fragrant orbs into a table display, or cut little slices in the top to feed some twine through them so your DIY natural air freshener can be hung.
