I recently got my hands on some fun new products to try: Grapeseed Oil and Black Lava Salt.
They came from Mountain Rose Herbs’ Epicurean Organics line, among many other great products.
Now, I’d heard of Grapeseed Oil before, though I’d never had an opportunity to try it. But I’d never in my life heard of Black Lava Salt. What is that anyways? Sounded fun though, and the description on the website intrigued me…
A revered and delectable salt exclusively used for adding depth and complexity to the finest of culinary creations. The added advantage of Black Lava salt is that it is infused with activated charcoal which assists the body in removing harmful impurities, and is exceptionally high in essential minerals to help maintain the body’s normal functions. Infused with activated charcoal, huh?! Immediately homemade chicken noodle soup with a dash of Black Lava Salt for winter colds and upset tummies came to mind.

Grapeseed Oil is one of those oils that is so good for you in so many ways. It’s loaded with vitamin E, is high in antioxidants, and is low in saturated fat. Not only can it be used for heart-healthy cooking, but it’s also an incredible moisturizer used in many beauty products. The great thing about GS oil when cooking is that it has a particularly high smoke point, meaning it can withstand higher temperatures without burning. It’s perfect for frying, sautéing, and stir-frying. It also has a very subtle flavor, so it’s perfect for using in your favorite homemade salad dressings or in recipes in which you desire to maintain the flavor of the main ingredients. Really, grapeseed oil is a delicious and healthy alternative to vegetable oil suitable for almost any recipe.
Not only that, it also makes a fantastic moisturizer. I’ve been using it on my face and body after washing, and I’ve found that it absorbs very nicely, and leaves my skin very soft and supple. My first impression was that it smelled a bit like wine (fermented grapes maybe?), but the aroma faded quickly. After applying it to my skin, I’ve been rubbing the little that remains on my hands through my hair for a frizz free, shiny finish. I plan on continuing to experiment with Grapeseed Oil in my homemade beauty products as I make them. It really is a nice, light product.
Here are a few recipes I plan on trying…
Lavender essential oil gives this body wash a fragrant scent, while grapeseed oil helps keep skin healthy.
- 1/2 cup liquid, unscented castile soap
- 1 tsp grapeseed oil
- 4 drops lavender essential oil
Pour ingredients into a container, swirl to mix, and store in the shower for up to one month.
This face wash will clean your skin without drying it out.
- 1 cup full-fat, plain yogurt
- 2 Tbsp grapeseed oil
- 1Tbsp freshly-squeezed lemon juice
Whip all ingredients until smooth. Pour mixture in a tightly-sealed glass jar and store in the refrigerator. This facial wash will keep for a few weeks.
Oooh, or I can warm it and add a few drops of lavender or rosemary essential oils for a nourishing hot oil hair treatment.
I can’t wait to play with this stuff some more!!
