This has been my go-to recipe for the past 5 years. It is SO GOOD, and way cheaper than buying a box of store bought stuff! Plus, it doesn’t have any of those nasty ingredients pre-packaged cocoa has.
The Best Homemade Hot Cocoa
(makes 1 cup)
- 1 Tbsp cocoa powder (I like Dutch Cocoa)
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp water
- 1 c. milk
- dash homemade vanilla
Put the cocoa powder, sugar, and water in a small saucepan. Heat over low until melted, stirring constantly. Add milk and vanilla and stir until heated through to desired temp. Double or triple recipe as needed. Enjoy!

This sounds SO yummy! Being frugal and liking the chemical free foods, this will be perfect for our household. Thank you, Kendra!
It really is yummy, Laurie 🙂 I hope you try it!
Has anyone tried this with almond milk or coconut milk for dairy allergies?
Sue,
I’m so glad you asked! I do use almond milk with this recipe for my little girl with a dairy allergy. It’s delicious 🙂
Those cocoa packets just don’t compare to the real thing! Thank you. 🙂
Amen to that, Gentle Joy!
Thank you so much for this recipe! I have been trying to find a hot chocolate recipe that does not use milk powder. We have several dairy cows and nothing is better than fresh milk in hot chocolate. My kids will be thrilled…:)
Yay! I’m so glad I could help. I think you guys will love this one 🙂
Yum! I make a very similar cocoa that my mom taught me … but when I make it for myself, I use very little sugar (I’m one of those super-dark-almost-bitter chocolate loving people). Oh, and at night sometimes I love to add in a splash of Peppermint Schnapps or Baileys! 🙂
I do a very similar recipe but with a couple of changes. If you melt the sugar and water until it starts to brown then add the coco and mix until it is well absorbed it gives an amazing caramel undertone! I also add the tiniest bit of sea salt.
