Any of you interested in keeping bees?
If you are like me, and love the idea of harvesting your own fresh honey but are intimidated by the thought of managing your own hives, Keeping Bees In Towns & Cities by Luke Dixon is a GREAT resource for beginners.
Even though this book is pretty much geared toward urban dwellers, almost all of the advice Dixon has to offer can be put to good use in the country as well.
Keeping Bees in Towns and Cities features everything an urbanite needs to know to start keeping bees: how to select the perfect hive, how to buy bees, how to care for a colony, how to harvest honey, and what to do in the winter. Urban beekeeping has particular challenges and needs; this book highlights the challenges and presents practices that are safe, legal, and neighbor-friendly. -Timber Press
One of the things I appreciated about this book is that the author is able to hold the reader’s attention by interjecting personal stories of his own beginner beekeeping experiences while lacing the text with plenty of interesting facts and informative side-notes. He walks you step by step through the process of raising bees and harvesting honey with a contagious passion enough to make anyone consider placing a hive out back.
My only caveat comes in the fourth chapter entitled Sex and the City Bee. It would have been more appealing to me if he had used the term “mating” instead of “having sex” throughout this section; it just seems more appropriate in the animal world to me. Call me overly conservative, just my two-cents.
